Why Valentine’s Day matters

Why Valentine's Day matters

Make dating part of your routine and keep your relationship filled with conversations, closeness and, of course, love

Valentine’s Day is fast approaching and here at A Year of Dates we tend to find that people have very different stances on the celebration. There are those that love the opportunity to dress up and have a date night with their partner – and then the other camp, which see the day as one purely as a commercial holiday.

As a romantic lot at heart, we are clearly in the former and, while we want you to date all year round, Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to enjoy a date night – the first of many maybe – have some fun and get those happy hormones flowing.

So we’ve rounded up our favourite reasons for why yes, Valentine’s Day really matters – and should absolutely be celebrated:

Reconnect
Let’s face it – life gets busy. Work, family commitments, chores … we all have a million and one excuses that stop us from prioritising our relationships. Acknowledging set dates like anniversaries – or indeed Valentine’s Day – gives us the chance to temporarily put the brakes on and carve out some quality time together. And that leads to all sorts of wonderful things, such as a deeper connection, better communication and a greater level of understanding between partners.

Take a break from the day to day
When was the last time your were frustrated because your partner forgot to put the bins out? Or were driven insane by their snoring? Sounds familiar?

When we live with someone day in day out, relationships can often be reduced to a list of essential chores that need to be carried out – and nothing more. In some cases, this can lead to resentment and point scoring – particularly if one party feels the other is not “up to scratch”.

Taking time to celebrate Valentine’s Day can act as a relationship reset. Time to have a date night away from the normal routine to rediscover each other – and remind yourselves of the reasons that you fell in love in the first place. In addition, this will get the endorphins flowing and prompt emotions such as pride, hope and overall contentment.

And after all, dating is where all of our stories began and where love blossomed, why wouldn’t you want to connect with these feelings again!

Why Valentine's Day matters

Love is good for our health
We all know that love gives us a feel good glow – but did you realise that it is actually good for your health too? Harvard Medical School research confirms that spreading love increases dopamine and energy.  There is also evidence to suggest that physical demonstrations of affection can improve some health factors and reduce the risk of heart disease.

So Valentine’s Day isn’t just all hearts and date night – it’s actually good for your health, too!

Try something different
When life is busy, we all crave a little excitement. When was the last time you tried things that you might not necessarily do together? Trying new things together can help even the longest standing couples learn a little more about each other and discover new shared interests. And it’s true what they say … couples who play together, stay together! And because life doesn’t always go as planned – even if you the date is a catalogue of disasters, rather than a new shared hobby, at least you will have a great story to tell and laugh about in years to come.

Start of something new
How many of us make the time to go on regular dates with our partner? Fewer than you might think! We believe that you should date all year round, not just on special occasions like Valentine’s day – but why not make it a starting point for regular date nights for the rest of 2024?

How a box of dates can help
But where do you start if you want to try new things, or date all year long? That’s where we come in! You don’t have to decide, you don’t have to argue over what to do, let the cards decide! Our date boxes contain a range of suggestions that will inspire romance, fun, laughter and more! Whether it is weekly dates, monthly, or anything in between we have a box that will help you kick start your dating story, and we think Valentine’s Day is the perfect place to start ?
