A Year of Dates: Our Story
From a date jar to an award-winning gift business
We're Kate and John, creators of A Year of Dates. It started with a Christmas gift in 2014 – John gave Kate 72 envelopes filled with date ideas. Every Monday, they'd open one and make it happen, no excuses.
What began as a way to keep their spark alive through busy weeks became something bigger. Friends loved the idea, but never had time to create their own. So in 2016, we launched A Year of Dates, turning our personal solution for making time together into a gift that helps other couples do the same.

Give the gift of time together each month with our monthly date idea subscription and receive 5 date ideas each month, renewing every 3 months, making dating more manageable.
Each suggestion will be sealed in an envelope, the colour of which will determine the type of date inside.
We’ve chosen a mixture of ideas from our most popular date boxes so each month you will get a mix of activities including; a movie to watch, something food related, a country inspired Round The World date, something to do at home and a day/night out.
With your first set of envelopes you will receive a personalised memory box to keep your envelopes – and any souvenirs in – this will also contain a card explaining the colour code, keep this safe as it will only be sent with first month.
We will send out the dates at the beginning of each month of your subscription

We aim to produce gifts that are 100% recyclable, and we encourage all those enjoying opening envelopes to recycle them after they’ve completed their activities.
Our boxes are 100% recyclable, and are constructed from ‘greyboard’ which is made from a mix of recycled and waste paper. The outer wrap paper is also recyclable.
Where possible, the paper we use for our card and envelopes is sourced from FSC-certified suppliers.
Shipping

We wish we could hand deliver every order placed with us. Alas, this isn't possible, so we have to rely on the postman.
We offer free Royal Mail Tracked 48 delivery on orders to the mainland UK over £10. These are usually delivered within 3 working day, but this is not guaranteed.
Express orders are sent using Royal Mail Special Delivery.
We also offer free international shipping on orders over £60 to most countries.
Our international orders are sent via Royal Mail International, and tracked depending on the destination.
Tracking is provided on all orders once dispatched and will be shown in your dispatch email.
We aim to send your order within 1 working day of receiving your payment. Orders received before 1pm UK time will be shipped the same day (excluding weekends and bank holidays).
*Shipping will be calculated at checkout, and any delivery costs required will be added at this point.
Frequently asked questions
I’ve lost the key for the Categorised dates, what do the colour of cards mean?
Each colour indicates a different type of date and comes in 4 colours:
Blue – Staying home
Yellow – Going out
Orange – A movie selection
Green – Round the world
Purple – A culinary adventure
Are the cards suitable for same sex couples?
Yes!
There is no mention of gender on the cards so they can be used by everyone.
If a decision needs to be made the person opening the envelope will be asked to flip a coin and choose heads or tails.
What is on the cards?
We obviously can’t reveal ALL our of secrets! There is some cross over between the different products with some of the most popular ideas appearing in all of the sets.
The activities are a range of things to do at home, nights out and days out. Some you might have thought of yourself, or be things you do regularly, but how you interpret the card is up to you. All of the envelopes are sealed so you get a surprise each time, if you don’t like what the card says you don’t have to do it, it’s about having fun, but it is also good to try things so don’t just dismiss it.
We haven’t suggested anything dangerous, illegal or scary – honest!
I don’t have time to do all these things
We know you are busy; a lot of the cards can be done at home in an evening or can fit in with your lifestyle. You also don’t have to open one every week, make it work for you, if just takes a bit of effort.
When will they arrive?
This is our 3 months subwscription, so payment will be taken automatically on 27th every three months.
We will then post out the cards which usually arrive early at the start of each month.
Is there is minimum commitment?
You can cancel at anytime! We have no minimum commitment following the first 3 months.
